I read an enlightening article on The Mighty yesterday. It is titled, “Schools Aren’t Preparing Students With Disabilities for Active Shooting Scenarios.”
I was compelled to comment (text below image):
“This post is enlightening. Thank you for writing it, and for giving people with a variety of disabilities a voice, Jordan Davidson.
I’ve had mild cerebral palsy since birth, but I did not struggle with mobility issues until adulthood. (I recently opened up about disability on my own blog: http://www.ambergreen.ca/unlimited-spirit/)
In reading your article, I identified with Elizabeth Mintz the most; I’ve always taken much longer than others to walk down the stairs. Though I had caring teachers throughout my education, no one ever questioned why I opted to hold the door for students during a drill. (I think people thought I was just being nice- the truth is, I didn’t want to get pushed down the stairs.) Fortunately, I have never been in a real emergency (thank goodness, because I would have been terribly ill-equipped).
Your article demonstrates that there is need for discussion and immediate action. If the safety of even one person is treated as an afterthought, it’s one too many.
To those schools that are properly equipped, perhaps they could get involved by sharing ideas, protocols and resources, which would assist in preparing those schools that are not. We’re all in this together (or, at least we should be).”
Give your life the green light! It’s A Go!
