Part 22

To Riches

Together since they were teenagers, Luke was always reminded of meeting Priscilla when the leaves started to change colours from the lush green of spring and summer to the deep reds, yellows and burnt oranges of fall.

Priscilla had just started grade 9 when one of her friends (who was the little sister of one of Luke’s friends) called him over to say hello to their group. Luke greeted the group and asked them how their first week was going. Most of them chatted excitedly, but Priscilla stayed quiet; he could see that she was a bit shy (he thought that perhaps it was because Luke was older than them, or maybe she was still getting used to her new life in high school). The girl who called him over introduced Priscilla to Luke as they stood outside under a few trees, conversing after class. Priscilla said hello and smiled shyly. Luke thought she was cute, but he had no idea that this girl would grow into the woman he would one day marry.

As they stood chatting under those trees, a single small leaf, tinted with orange hues fell from its branch and landed on her dark, shiny hair. Priscilla was starting to open up a bit, as she was telling him about her classes; she hadn’t realized that a leaf had fallen, so he gently brushed it away. She blushed at this simple gesture and told him when they started to date a year or so later that that fallen leaf made her fall for him (oh, young love!).

From the time they starting dating, Luke and Priscilla went through so many seasons- so many of life’s transitions- together. He wouldn’t have it any other way.

Luke never really thought of himself as a romantic guy, but after their lives changed when Frankie received her windfall of wealth, and the family had the means to travel wherever they wanted, it became very important to Luke that he and Priscilla travel home to see the leaves change every autumn.

From Rags

“Are you sure that you have everything?” Priscilla asked Luke quietly, as they hugged at the front door. It was still dark in the very early morning; their full house was still as everyone else was fast asleep.

“Yeah, I have it. Thanks, honey,” he said, kissing her. “You’re sure you’re going to be okay with everything here for a few days?”

“We’ll manage,” she smiled, confidently.

“Don’t let the boys walk all over you,” Luke said seriously. “Feel free to use the ominous line my mom used to use on us– Wait ’til your father gets home…”

He smiled as Priscilla rolled her eyes. “Please, the boys are more afraid of upsetting me than they are of you. They’ll miss having you around as an ally.”

“That’s true,” he agreed and they chuckled quietly as he picked up his bag and she opened the front door.

“Have fun on your fishing trip! Love you,” she said as he stepped out.

“Love you, too. See you in a few days,” Luke replied and smiled at her as he closed the door behind him.
