The Story Behind ‘Puppy Love’

Throughout the long weekend, I’ve been publicizing my short story, ‘Puppy Love.’ (**If you have an Amazon account, I’m offering it for FREE until 11:59 pm, PT on Monday, February 17, 2020.**)

This is the synopsis:

Like her name, Candy is a sweet six-year-old dog who never imagined life without her beloved human. When she finds herself up for adoption, she learns about the dark past plaguing the dog in the neighbouring kennel; hardships she hadn’t contemplated.

In this heartwarming short story, a dog’s point of view uniquely illuminates the human experience of overcoming hardship and heartache, establishing friendship, and the virtue of loyalty.

Inspiration for ‘Puppy Love’

Before writing this short story, I was talking to a family member about depression and the prevalence of anxiety in our society. (As an aside, I’m so happy that mental health is discussed openly. Have you seen Oprah’s 2020 Vision Tour Visionaries: Lady Gaga Interview? If not, do yourself a favour, and check it out. I hope that the stigma surrounding mental health issues comes to an end in my lifetime. Go, Gaga!) During our conversation, a re-run of Cesar Millan’s Dog Nation: Meet Me in St. Louis (season 1, episode 4) played. In that episode, they discussed the atrocity of puppy mills.

Combining these themes, I was inspired to consider how dogs from different backgrounds would be impacted by mental health issues (if they experienced life the way we do). Employing significant creative license (the story is in the perspective of a dog, after all), I wrote ‘Puppy Love’ (fun fact: I named the human character ‘Ellen’ after Ellen DeGeneres, as she loves animals).

The Power of the Internet

This is the first story that I’ve released exclusively to Amazon’s KDP Select publishing platform. It was on the #1 New Release List on Valentine’s Day (thanks for your support!), and it has a 5-star rating, which includes reviews from Canada and the UK. Extraordinary! Thank you for your kind words, Val and Julie!

Young Readers

‘Puppy Love’ has inspired me to write short stories for young readers, as my stories are intended to be enjoyed in thirty minutes or less, and they are inspirational and thoughtful. I hope that my words resonate with parents and teens alike, as I truly believe that- even when life gets you down- each and every one of us can have an impact.

Thanks for reading. It’s A Go!

2019: Year of the Phoenix

2019 may be the year of the pig in East-Asian/Chinese astrology (it remains so until January 24, 2020), but for yours truly, it has been the year of the Phoenix (like that in ancient Greek folklore).

I burned my preconceived notions and tired formats to the ground through three major shifts and accomplishments in my professional life this year:

  1. I started my own publishing company, It’s A Go Publishing, in order to self-publish electronic short stories available through Amazon (Kindle) and Kobo. Each story is/will be written with a message of hope, empowerment, and inspiration intended to permit each reader to enjoy, pause, and reflect. In time, I seek to build an online following that I will use to leverage a highly coveted publishing deal with a major publishing house for my first novel. Speaking of which,
  2. I completed my first novel earlier this year, which is the first installment of a trilogy. In my pursuit of a literary agent, I have already been the beneficiary of great kindness from other writers and professionals in the publishing industry, who have served as learned cartographers as I continue to navigate my travels through the literary landscape.
  3. I shifted and redefined the focus of my freelance writing business, The Write Results.

I emerge from the ashes with these experiences and sage lessons as a businesswoman with a new sense of purpose, an impregnable answer for the oh-so-necessary, “What’s my why?” and continued feelings of gratitude for all of those who have helped me along the way.

Whatever your business- whatever your purpose- I hope that you will join me as I bring the heat in 2020.

Extinguish the doubts and fears that have been holding you back and illuminate your dreams until your mission is ablaze. Like the Phoenix, rise from the ashes of your past lessons and welcome a renewed, revitalized version of yourself this new year.

It’s A Go, 2020! Let’s light it up!

An Uber Ride for Angel Investors

It was a pleasure to write this piece for Georgian Angel Network
Uber benefitted from visionary angel investors in 2010, who were rewarded with riches less than a decade later.
Whether you’re an angel or entrepreneur, this article will inspire you.

Angel investors see the vision before it takes shape. They feel the passion, understand the dream, relish innovation and are inspired by bold, new technologies that seek to thrust a stagnant industry through a major disruption. Such disruption has the power to change society’s thinking, add to our everyday lexicon and fill a need with such ease, we wonder how we ever got along before its advent.

Angel investors reach for their chequebooks long before the masses have the opportunity to storm the bandwagon. It’s risky, but sometimes, the payoff is extraordinary. On Friday, May 10th, 2019, Uber Technologies, Inc. had its initial public offering (IPO) (NYSE: UBER). Angel investors were rewarded handsomely, as according to The Wall Street Journal, “In 2010, 18 funds and individuals valued Uber at $5.4 million. Today, that same company is worth $82 billion” (*Uber is valued at approximately $76.5 billion at the time of writing this article). Such astonishing returns are not guaranteed, but Georgian Angel Network’s Managing Director, Michael Badham, reminds angel investors that- when the risk pays off- patience is rewarded. He imagines that a number of prospective investors would have refrained from investing in Uber; achieving success in such a highly regulated industry would have been difficult to fathom. By the time the opportunity to liquidate an angel investment presents itself (after witnessing a company’s growth, the addition of services and pivoting, when necessary), angel investors have experienced quite the ride.

Stop on red… or should you?

According to Fast Company, “New shareholders will have [to] contend with how Uber becomes profitable–and if it can.” Though Uber has completed 23 rounds of funding, including Series A funding in 2011 to Series G late-stage funding in 2016, Uber remains committed to their vision as they continue to provide 17 million trips per day across six continents. In a letter to the public, Uber’s CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi stated, “…we will not shy away from making short-term financial sacrifices where we see clear long-term benefits.” Still, profitability (or lack thereof) is something investors consider (however, it is not uncommon for a tech company to go public before becoming profitable). In Uber’s case, the three platforms through which the offer is structured (via Personal Mobility [includes: Ridesharing, New Mobility, Uber for Business and Uber Health], Uber Eats and Uber Freight [includes: Uber Freight for Carriers and Uber Freight Platform for Shippers]) encourages the examination of the company’s potential to pivot, expand within, or reinvent different industries.

Advance on green

When considering what’s next for Uber, we must ask ourselves: do Uber’s three platforms exhibit the same entrepreneurial daring that inspired angel investors to invest in Uber in 2010? Now that Uber is a public company, are we interested in joining them for the ride?

When contemplating these questions, potential investors should be aware that Uber is developing other fascinating platforms, including driverless cars and Uber Air.

Autonomous vehicles

Drivers are Uber’s biggest cost, but autonomous vehicles could be more than a decade away. Uber has revamped their commitment to safety after halting testing for nine months and shutting operations down in Arizona last year because a woman was tragically struck and killed by an Uber vehicle that was in autonomous mode (a driver was in the car, but failed to prevent the accident).

In order to continue advancing this initiative, “Uber has poured money into the Advanced Technologies Group’s work—nearly $1.1 billion since 2016, including $457 million in 2018.” When it comes to developing driverless cars, Uber is focused on securing their spot in the driver’s seat.

From streets to skies

Uber is planning to launch Uber Elevate (Uber Air) in 2023, which will offer aerial ridesharing between cities and suburbs. Their goal is to “launch fleets of small, electric VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft in Dallas, Los Angeles, and a to-be-announced international market.”

Investors and the public will scrutinize the future of Uber, but it’s clear that when it comes to this tech giant, the sky really is the limit.
